a soviet throwback
Where do you even start with the Bufete… A bar, a cafe(?) and a way of life, located on A.Kalniņa street (Riga’s SoHo, so to speak). The cheapest of cheap cafes in Riga where booze prices will make you super excited, then scared for your health and even life. If 1 EUR beer 15 years ago wouldn’t be anything surprising, then in 2016 it’s something we haven’t gotten our heads around, but instead of calculating you should be focusing on enjoying their flashback design and the genuine atmosphere of the place. Bar, located in a cage, for the “safety” of the staff, no chairs(you can’t stand – you have to leave) and the very Soviet low maintenance lavatories make this the most realistic communist-day style cafe of them all, it’s not a gimmick, it’s a lifestyle.
Prepare to meet everyone, from curious tourists, Erasmus students, workers in their 40s to the firm believers in alcohol being a functional liquid and nothing more than the fuel of the proletariat and local hipsters having an ironic pint with some dried fish. The 50 cent sandwiches, vobla and cheaper than water tomato juice will feed you for less than a tram ticket and the 0.69 EUR vodka shots will get you drunk for less than a cab ride. Consider you’ve been warned!
