Winter in Riga

Riga - Freedom Monument - Winter 01

Greetings from Riga! Hopefully you have not been getting too cold now that the winter has arrived here in Europe. 2015 has been a great year here at E.a.t. Riga Tours. We have had the opportunity to meet so many great people, whether on one of our bike tours, walking tours, at the Riga Explorers Club or just floating around the city. We want to say a big thank you for all of your support and hope to see some of you again in the great city of Riga soon.

Our tours are running over the winter period but at a slightly slower pace. Make sure to contact us in advance to secure a space on a tour. After a long summer season and a big goodbye to one of our long term employee’ s, many of us are taking a hard earned break from touring and escaping the darkness as the days get ever shorter.

What do we recommend for you during winter here? Well I for one am a sucker for a good cake and coffee and Riga has plenty of cafes and spaces to dive into when the cold winds get too much to bare! On our walking tours during these times we can always make time for a warming pit stop and refreshing hot drink! Our retro and vintage tour is a good choice for winter touring as we visit many indoor spaces, shops, galleries, cafes and more to warm you on your way.

All in all winter is a time to let yourself go a bit, fatten up, explore the indoor wonders that the city has to offer! With less than 7 hrs daylight during December and sunset starting as early 15:42 in the afternoon it is no wonder that some people need a little ‘recharging’ in Riga. Imagine on December 22nd when it is Winter Solstice, sunrise is starting only at 09:00!

Because of these short days a great tip to surviving the colder and darker months in Riga is to plan your time well! Keep a close eye on daylight hours. With sunset coming dangerously close to a late lunch we advise people to get up early, explore the city whilst the skies are blue (hopefully they are not too grey!) and make the most of the darkness but visiting museums, shops, cafes and bars once the Sun has gone from the skies. If you wish to book a tour a 09:00 start time is a great way to make the most of your day!

Whatever you do during your winter months, we wish you a great time and hope to hear from you soon. Take care. From all at the E.a.t. Riga Tours Team
