Riga’s one and only charity shop, Otra Elpa, has just opened it’s second store in the city and the third in Latvia. Located at Stabu iela 35, the new store sells clothes, books, crockery and much more, and has a great little cafe downstairs serving coffee, tea and snacks.
Whilst there are a number of shops and markets selling second hand clothes and other objects here in Riga, there is only one which can truly call itself a charity shop or opportunity shop. Relying on donations from the Latvian public, Otra Elpa gives these items a “second breath” (or “otra elpa”) and donates the profits generated to local charity organisations.
Their new shop on Stabu iela includes a downstairs cafe, serving Fairtrade coffee, tea and snacks. The original shop in the Berga Bazars complex (Marijas iela 13) still has a large, constantly changing selection of clothes and books and there is also a third shop located in Liepaja on Latvia’s west coast.
If you want to feel good whilst shopping, and would like to avoid looking like a H&M clone, then pop into Otra Elpa and help them help those in need. Alternatively, if you have something you don’t need, and it is still in good condition, then they would be happy to receive your donations.
