latvia - midsummers - flowercrownFrom 30th of June till 7th of July Riga’s streets will be filled with thousands of singers and dancers from all over Latvia, who came to participate in the 24th Song and Dance Festival – a tradition that stretches back to the 19th century.

Riga became the home of the festival in 1873, with Latvia still being a part of the Russian Empire and since it’s beginnings Song and Dance Festival takes place every 5 years. Plenty of time to practice new songs and dance moves.

Today this festival is the most important event of it’s kind here in Latvia – “the nation that sings”, since it has it’s own law and is included in the UNESCO list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

So if you’re a person who likes to sing or dance, it just could be the highlights of your summer if you get your hands on the tickets, which has become quite hard, since pretty much everyone here in Latvia is fond of singing or dancing, or both.
